Gender Pronouns

Why Are They Important?

Gender Pronouns

If you are a cisgender person (someone who identifies with the sex they were assigned at birth), it might be a little confusing and/or difficult to relate to adding your pronoun to your emails.

However, for transgender individuals (people who don’t identify with the sex they were assigned at birth) and non-binary individuals, having their pronouns listed is really important because they aren’t misgendered and their identity is respected.

Declaring our pronouns makes others’ lives easier by letting them know how we identify.  This will eliminate confusion and minimise the chance of anyone being misgendered.

An act as simple as adding pronouns to our signatures can lead us on the way to normalising pronouns and enable us to make progress towards an inclusive and more accepting world for all.

Please remember that many people choose not to have their pronouns in an email signature but this doesn’t mean that they are not focusing on inclusion as it is a personal decision.
